E-COMMERCE
There are several advantages with card payment over the Internet:
- You can reach cardholders throughout the world.
- You can receive payment - and do business - 24 hours a day.
- You can receive settlement of funds from Euroline in a wide range of currencies.
- You will receive settlement of funds fast.
- Your customers can carry out secure transactions with their credit cards on the Internet.
In conjunction with sales over the Internet, mail and telephone order the credit card is not physically present, and you are unable to identify the cardholder in the same manner as when the card is present. Accordingly you as a merchant usually bear the risk associated with all purchase transactions in conjunction with Internet, mail and telephone order sales.
Therefore, MasterCard and Visa offer a global standard for credit card transactions over the Internet, called 3D Secure or MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa. The aim of this standard is to reduce your chargeback costs, but also to provide cardholders with an opportunity to identify themselves vis-á-vis their card issuer.
All purchases paid with credit cards which take place over the Internet must be authorized regardless of the amount. You as a Merchant must have some form of electronic connection to a card acquirer or what is referred to as PSP (Payment Service Provider) which has an established connection to the acquirers.
Please read further below, to learn more about 3D Secure and how you and your customers can benefit from implementing it.
How 3D Secure works:
1. The right software.
In order for you to handle 3D Secure, you must contact a PSP
(list of PCI DSS certified ones) which offers the technology and the necessary connections to the acquirers.
2. The cardholder identifies himself:
An MPI has contact with the card networks and verifies whether the issuer of the customer's card is connected to 3D Secure. If so, the cardholder is in turn connected to his card-issuing bank in order to identify himself with, e.g., a password or a token. The card-issuing bank can thereby be sure it really is their customer.
3. Merchant Only Liability Shift.
Visa and MasterCard may also stipulate that Euroline is not entitled to charge back disputed amounts which are the subject of a cardholder complaint by reasons of fraudulent or unauthorized purchases. Such rules may apply even if the cardholder is not authenticated by him-/herself vis-á-vis his/her card issuer.
In order to commence accepting card payments over the Internet you will need the following:
1. An Internet connection and a Web shop; you can purchase the Web shop or develop it yourself.
2. Approved software. In order to be able to accept card payments over the Internet, your company will need to install an MPI approved by Euroline or be connected to a certified PSP (Payment Service Provider).
3. Acquiring agreement with Euroline.
4. An operating agreement with a PSP or equivalent.
5. You must fulfill Visa and MasterCard's requirements for secure e-commerce.
