From paper memos and magnetic strips to Chip & PIN
2012-05-30, 09:40
The number of Chip & PIN cards has increased rapidly in recent years. Now the industry is making the transition to an even safer technology. Today, all MasterCard and Visa cards in the EU are evolving to be equipped with the chip.
It is therefore high time to also replace the magnetic strip terminals and the even older paper notes, and thereby close the door on the old techniques for good.
Make sure you replace your terminals before October 1, 2012!
That’s right. From October 1, 2012 we will be closing all payment terminals that are not equipped with the Chip & PIN technology. If you have not yet changed your old terminal to a Chip & PIN terminal, then we urge you do so now, so that you do not lose the ability to make card payments. *
In the case of cards that still lack the Chip, the magnetic strip will function as it normally has. These cards will function just as well in the new terminals as they are equipped with dual technology, i.e., both Chip and magnetic readers.
